Netflix has just made an exciting announcement regarding the highly anticipated return of the series Squid Game. Get ready to see it back in the spotlight. In 2021, this series shook audiences by offering a simple yet incredibly effective concept. The end of season 2 clearly hinted at a continuation, which has finally been confirmed. But when will it be released? We finally have the answer, and it will probably put many at ease. The second season of Squid Game was technically scheduled for 2024, but without official confirmation, we were left in the dark. Would the series be delayed or pushed back? Our colleagues at Deadline then reported the information, and there’s nothing to worry about. The American giant explained that it is indeed planned for this year, while also expressing excitement about presenting their 2024 lineup. As for the future, despite last year’s strikes that delayed the launch of some titles, we have an ambitious plan for 2024.
Now, what can we expect from this sequel to Squid Game? As a reminder, the first part followed the story of Seong Gi-Hun, a debt-ridden man who decides to participate in a rather peculiar competition. 456 participants compete in games inspired by childhood, with a grand prize of 45.6 billion wons (approximately 32 million euros) at stake. The problem is that in case of failure, you’re not simply out of the game. Well, technically you are, but not before getting shot in the head and then wrapped in a mortuary bag. Needless to say, it’s not to be taken lightly. It’s one of the biggest hits of the service, hence the enormous anticipation surrounding season 2. In fact, the concept was so well-received that a reality show inspired by the series was created. Named “Squid Game: The Challenge,” the idea is generally the same, with the only difference being that you don’t die if you lose. Though not reaching the level of the original show, it was a success, albeit subject to controversies.
Returning to Squid Game season 2, we don’t know much about it. Yes, we haven’t had a big, noteworthy trailer to sink our teeth into. The only thing we can confirm is that director Hwang Dong-hyeok will be at the helm once again. At least he’s in familiar territory, and it promises a tense story with just as twisted games. We will also see the return of certain characters from the first season, such as the recruiter of the candidates or the main protagonist.
